July 4, 2012 Ancient Technology vs Ancient Aliens: Moving and Cutting Stone
It drives me crazy when I watch television shows that ask questions such as, “How could ancient man have created massive stone monuments, such as the Great Pyramid or Puma Punku, without the benefit of modern tools and machinery?” ; then follow the question up with speculation about how Aliens must have made the monuments from a researcher like the floofy-haired guy pictured below.
I like to believe that mankind has been a species of thinkers, innovators and technologists for much longer than our modern telling of history gives us credit for, but in this case let’s take a look at the technology known to have been in use and accepted by most historians. Take for an example Ancient Aliens The Mystery of Puma Punku season 4, episode 6.
The H blocks, Gateway of the Sun, and other square-cut objects (pictured below) at Puma Punku are said to be too difficult to cut with stone age tools by ancient alien/astronaut proponents. Often times on these television shows, books and blogs, it is speculated that these materials can barely be cut or moved now; so that alone should be proof enough of evidence for extraterrestrial influence.

Puma Punku is provided as evidence for E.T., but look at the detail of carving on the Code of Hammurabi. Diorite tools and vessels were being used thousands of years ago.
In fairness to the ancient alien proponents, the stones at Puma Punku are very heavy, difficult to cut and sourced from more than 15km away in some cases. The blocks found at Puma Punku are made of red sandstone or andesite, with the latter being used for more intricate work such as the inset cuts. These ancient builders also were metal workers, which is evidenced by the use of I-shaped metal clasps.
The limestone obelisks and granite blocks of ancient Egypt are known to have been worked using diorite and/or dolerite stone cutting tools (pictured) in combination with the application of fire for increased cutting speed and efficiency. I recently watched Dr. Zahi Hawass perform experiments proving that using fire pits to soften the rock allowed it to then be quickly pulverized by workers using stone balls of greater hardness.
Cutting limestone is one thing, but ancient alien proponents often point out that granite and diorite are much harder, if not impossible, to cut with ancient tools to high levels of precision. After a little searching around, I found many examples of intricate stonework being produced thousands of years before the Puma Punku site was erected such as the Code of Hammurabi. Carved in 1772 B.C from a large piece of diorite (more than equivalent to the hardness and durability of the andesite blocks at Puma Punku), it was created more than 2,000 years before Puma Punku.
Diamond tools are known to have been used for thousands of years (2500 B.C. in China), and maybe even much longer as nothing would have barred the mineral from being collected (as it is found naturally in the Earth’s crust). The reason that no diamond tools remain on these sites to be found today should be obvious to any modern or ancient observer; their value would not allow them to be discarded.
The drill holes and complex interlocking blocks would be a complicated engineering feat, but stone drills have been proven to be able to cut those holes at a similar level of precision in granite and sandstone. Since copper was known to have been in use as well, the claims of drilling being proof of ancient aliens requires more than a stretch of the imagination. Also at Pumu Punku can be found hydraulic hoses and aqueducts used for sewage management and irrigation of agriculture. The Greeks, then later the Romans were known to have similar aqueduct and pumping/piping technology which also predates the Puma Punku site.
In closing, I suggest that anyone who doubts that ancient man could have moved large stone blocks around should watch this YouTube video. Without the aid of pulleys, hoists, metal levers and/or other advanced tools, a man named Wally Wallington is able to not only move and position large stone blocks weighing many tons each; but actually erects a 19,000 pound obelisk by himself on video. How does Wally accomplish this? Sticks and stones!

Then again, an alien might feel the need to jump into his or her remarkably advanced spacecraft and travel light years across the galaxy to our little planet just to carve a big rock.
Keep up the good work. I enjoy the website.

Most likely there are aliens living in our universe that is filled with trillions of stars. I don’t doubt that, but I can neither confirm it. What I doubt is that ancient technologies created by humans are somehow related to visits by aliens, which seems to be the topic of each episode of the History Channel’s Ancient Aliens. You seem to accept their postulates without any proof and believe that ancient humans were nothing but cave men, but in reality humans have been inventors and innovators for tens of thousands of years.

No matter how many different theories are produced regarding these sophisticated ancient stone works – we are still stuck with the evidence that indicates accuracy and techniques that sophisticated stone workers using computer driven machining won’t touch today. Rad the article on ancient Egypt stone technologies. This will likely apply to many other sites around the world. There is a complex history attached to these we have not yet realized. It is easy to push it off to ancient aliens – it could be a previous advanced society that developed on this planet. Or if you think about it – if you did traverse to a planet for mineral extraction, having the infrastructure with you to transport back, that is a big operation. It might be best to use the most durable and abundant resources for living space, culture and operations. Stone. The technology you need to do this is an extension of the mining capacity you take to the planet. Something very sophisticated happened at likely an unknown time-frame. I don’t think we know very much about the whole thing yet. We keep throwing explanations at it that may well have little to do with reality.

I agree. I watch AA on H2 because I like the REAL objects and places they present. But I have to mentally replace ‘Ancient Aliens’ with ‘Ancient Humans’ in my head while watching the show. Sometimes, it is fun to sit and argue with the TV while it’s on. Seriously though. We NEED a show called ‘Ancient Humans’ to offset this crap. I’m sick of hearing that here us here hu-mons are so stupid, we can’t even tie our own shoelaces (or invent shoelaces OR SHOES!) without the assistance of ‘little green guys’!
Christ! Even Von Däniken gets pissed off at how this is being turned into a freaking religion people like Tsoukalos.

I think both academics and ancient alien proponents are wrong. We humans were the ancient aliens. Most of the native peoples of central and south america even say they built their cities upon the remains of a far more advanced and much older civilization. We’ve just become arrogant in trying to fit human history into the last 6,000 years. However more and more evidence suggests humans had megalithic cities during the end of the last ice age. We have found two off the coast of India which could only have been built during the last ice age.

And that is the goal of deep historians.. to understand the time before history. We humans have been modern for more than 100,000 years after all..

Wally seems to have something going there, however if you look closely, he’s depending on a hard concrete base to do all of his turning and moving on. The question still remains completely unanswered because most Ancient sites have plain dirt and sand under where they are working and the terrain is uneven where the large stone blocks would have been transported over in many cases with no waterways available or anywhere near many of the building sites or quarries. In sites like Puma Punku trees for rollers or other uses may have been out of the question because Puma Punku is above the treeline and you can’t see any trees or even bushes for that matter.

It’s pretty easily actually…hit the stone with very high voltage and it becomes light enough to move on its own. In the box he simply had 4 inductors that created a resonance with the earth. At 30′ of height his inductors could be harvesting 1500v or more. Plenty to accomplish his goal.

Ok and now pretend the block is 200,000 pounds what then. Nothing. OK. I didn’t need to watch your video. People are so afraid if being wrong about history. Stand a pillar that is 200000 pounds and 45 feet tall. Then we will talk. Ps there are heavier block that have been “moved”

You are willing to go to a place where aliens or the supernatural are involved instead of a simple answer supported by observational science (heck, you won’t even watch the video — your belief is so strong!). If an old man in Flint, Michigan can move 2,000 pounds by himself- of course a large team of stone working experts with thousands of years of collective experience in working stone- couldn’t erect a much larger stone monument? Don’t worry, you (modern human) watching Ancient Aliens with barely a grasp of geometry and mathematics (let alone English prose) is far more scientific than the thousands of ancient stone working guild members known to have lived and worked during the time of the pyramids. Ever hear of confirmation bias? Do me a favor and look it up, or just go read some pyramid/crystal skull/alien conspiracy sites that align to your world view.

Let’s talk about tons. 200,000 pounds = 90 tons. What about 1,500 tons?
